Choosing a House Style

House style

What kind of house style will you choose?

Buying a home is a big step but it can feel even bigger when trying to decide what kind of home is for you. Whether you want the traditional Baltimore row home or a single family Cape Cod, it is important for you to make this decision before looking for your perfect house style. Let’s take a look at the most common house styles you can choose from for your new home.

A Cape Cod

With roots that date back to 1675, Cape Cod is a popular house style for homes built in the 1930s. Typically one or one and a half stories, the Cape Cod style features a steep roofline, wood or vinyl siding, and hardwood floors inside. While the original houses were pretty small, modern versions boast added dormer windows for space, light, and ventilation.

French Country

Dating back to the 18th century, French Country homes originated when France occupied much of the eastern North America. These homes are often one story with many narrow windows with shutters, and steeply pitched roofs that are hipped or side-gabled.

Colonial Style

The Colonial style is one of the most popular house styles in the United States. With two or three stories, these homes usually come with fireplaces and brick or wood facades. The classic Colonial house floor plan has a kitchen and a family room on the first level with bedrooms and bathrooms on the second.

Craftsman Style

Craftsman bungalow was a popular house style in the beginning of the 20th century but it is making a comeback today. Distinguished for the large amount of interior woodwork, these homes also feature low-pitched roofs with wide eave overhangs and porches that are framed with tapered columns.

Rancher Homes

Rancher homes usually have simple floor plans with attached garages and efficient living spaces. These styles date back to the 1930s but are still being used today. Although they may appear to be small and plain on the outside, they often offer great potential inside for large spaces and additions.

Whether you are looking for your perfect home or a home to renovate into your own, these house styles offer great bones and plenty of space to make it your own. For more information on finding your new home, call Simply Referable today!
